'Call of Duty', it has to be said, is probably the most well-known, well-received and most popular games to have ever existed.

The following is a list of Call of Duty games, systems they were released on and their developers sorted by year of release. Call of Duty - 2003 - PC - Infinity Ward (released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as of 2009 under Call of Duty: Classic) Call of Duty: United Offensive - 2004 - PC - Gray Matter Interactive Studios Call of Duty: Finest Hour - 2004 - Xbox, PlayStation 2, Gamecube - Spark.

  • The Call of Duty series returns this time into a modern day setting. The player takes control of a character nicknamed 'Soap,' for the majority of the campaign and will need to progress through many modern warfare scenarios.
  • Call of Duty is a 2003 first-person shooter video game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It is the first installment in the Call of Duty franchise, released on October 29, 2003, for Microsoft Windows. The game simulates infantry and combined arms warfare of World War II using a modified version of the id Tech 3 engine.
  • One of the better games of the franchise was Call of Duty: Black Ops, which took players into the secretive Cold War era. The game takes place twenty years after the events of COD: World At War. Themes of espionage and mind control drive forward the spy thriller plot of the game, which began a successful run of titles in the Black Ops series.

From its inception in 2003 as a bog-standard first-person shooter, it has gone on to become the planet's number one go-to for first person shooters – spawning a juggernaut series that entices multiple games developers to dip their toes in and leave their mark on the franchise.

For what is basically the law now, there is seemingly a new CoD out every year, just in time for Christmas. Each CoD has its own story to tell and allows you to play as a character from various wars to have taken place over history.

This article will feature a list of every mainline Call of Duty game ranking from worst to best, that is, according to Metacritic score.

16. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare – 78/3.7 (Infinity Ward, 2016)

Infinite Warfare has gone down as the worst ranked CoD of all time, according to Metacritic, though 78 is a very respectable score.

Not the most popular of CoD's ever released, this one won't exactly go down in the memory books to be honest.

14. Call Of Duty: WW2 – 80/4.2 (Sledgehammer Games, 2017)

Again, somewhat of a disappointment amongst the gaming community as didn't quite live up to the hype.

13. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – 81/2.4 (Infinity Ward, 2019)

This was a much-loved surprise by many fans across the board, with so much riding on how audiences would receive a reboot of such a beloved title – Infinity Ward can pat themselves on the back for this one, but it's still rather low down on the rankings.

12. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 – 81/4.9 (Treyarch, 2015)

Boasting a superior user score to Modern Warfare, Black Ops 3 has the edge here.

11. Call of Duty 3 – 82/6.6 (Treyarch, 2006)

The first CoD game entry from Treyarch and not a bad one at that, bit of a classic!

10. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 – 83/5.1 (Treyarch, 2012)

A mixed bag of emotions amongst many CoD fans, a little bit like Marmite – some loved it, some hated it.

9. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare – 83/5.7 (Sledgehammer Games, 2014)

Sat well with critics, perhaps not as well with many fans.

8. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 – 85/4.1 (Treyarch, 2018)

Treyarch did well here, despite being the first game in the franchise to be void of any kind of campaign mode, the game's multiplayer mode and robust zombies package made up for this in abundance.

7. Call of Duty: World at War – 85/7.6 (Treyarch, 2018)

To many fans, this is up there – potential favourite worthy. Fantastic campaign, indulging multiplayer experience and was the first CoD to introduce the world to zombies.

A solid sequel and follow up to the ground breaker that was the first game, not really anything different from the first – why fix something that isn't broken kind of thing.

5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – 88/3.4 (Infinity Ward, 2011)

Call Of Duty On Computer

Not quite to the level of the first two Modern Warfare games, but a solid entry nevertheless.

4. Call of Duty: Black Ops – 88/6.6 (Treyarch, 2010)

All Call Of Duty Games In Order

Sims 4 demo pc. The first CoD to properly delve into the Cold War era and was a major hit with critics and fans alike, a lot of love has been shown for this first instalment of Black Ops all round.

3. Call of Duty 91/8.1 (Infinity Ward, 2003)

Where it all began, the original in the franchise and has held up a lot of positive reviews, perhaps it's the novelty of it being the first?

2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – 92/8.5 (Infinity Ward, 2007)

This entry should hardly come as a surprise, due to the sheer amount of sales alone, and the influence it has had on the genre of first-person shooters as a whole – this game is rightfully second.

1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – 94/6.5 (Infinity Ward, 2009)

An all-rounder. A solid campaign, matched by an indulgent Spec Ops mode accompanied by an immersive online multiplayer experience – this is, in many fans' opinions, rightly at the top spot on the list.
